About Sassafras
Sassafras Lowrey is an internationally award winning queer storyteller, author, artist, and educator. She believes that everyone has a story to tell, and that the telling of those stories is essential to creating social change. Sassafras teaches storytelling workshops for schools, conferences and for community groups across the country.
Sassafras was honored as one of Portland’s top emerging writers by In Other Words feminist books in 2004, and one of Go Magazine’s Top 100 Women We Love in 2009. She is the editor of the Kicked Out anthology (Homofactus Press) which brought together the voices of current and former homeless LGBTQ youth to share stories of survival and to raise awareness of the epidemic of LGBTQ youth homelessness.
An accomplished storyteller, Sassafras was an original member of “The Language of Paradox” founded and directed by Kate Bornstein, has toured regionally with “The Femme Show” and was part of Dixon Place’s 17th annual HOT festival of queer culture. Her visual art has been showcased in conferences and galleries around the world. Including the “Fresh Meat” Gallery in San Francisco, “TransGiving” in Los Angeles, the legendary “Southern Comfort” conference in Atlanta, and the SHOUT festival in Birmingham England.
Sassafras has contributed to numerous anthologies including: LGBTQ: America Today, The Femme Coloring Book, Gendered Hearts, Spilling Over, and Visible: A Femmethology. She is a monthly columnist for Curve Magazine and writes regularly for other LGBTQ publications.
Sassafras lives in New York City with her partner performance artist Kestryl Cael, two puddle-shaped- cats, and a princess dog.
